Jacob “Jake” Chisolm was born on September 7, 1884, in Allendale County, South Carolina, the first child of James and Edith Chisolm. From humble beginnings, Jake would grow into a man widely respected throughout the Allendale and Hampton County communities for his remarkable work ethic, entrepreneurial spirit, and ability to provide for both family and neighbors.

Jake first married Molsie Smalls, and together they had eight children. After her passing, he married Mozelle Grayhart in 1929, and their union brought six more children into the growing Chisolm family. His household was large, vibrant, and grounded in the values of hard work and perseverance.

Known as a man of many talents, Jake was a successful farmer whose land fed not only his own family but also his brother Stephen’s family and many people throughout the local community. He was also a skilled fisherman whose fresh catches were so popular that, according to local stories, everything he brought in was sold almost immediately. In addition, Jake was a gifted builder and contractor who could repair or construct nearly anything, a craft he proudly passed down to his sons.

As opportunities shifted in the South, Jake joined many of his children, nieces, and nephews in moving to Jersey City, New Jersey, in search of a better future. There he quickly built a reputation as an honest, dependable contractor whose work spoke for itself. Jake continued his trade and remained a respected figure in his community until his passing in 1959, leaving behind a powerful legacy of resilience, skill, and family strength.
